On Thursday, March 29 Mr. Toro will be in the cafeteria during all three lunches to collect all final AP payments. This year, federal and state funding to help qualified students to pay for these exams was cut. As a result, all high schools in Rhode Island who administer AP exams must adhere to the following payment policy per the Rhode Island Department of Education as determined by the Federal School Lunch Guidelines.

GROUP A: For students who do not qualify for a free or reduced lunch under the Federal School Lunch Guidelines, the cost is $87.00 per exam minus the $13.00 deposit per exam paid in February, a final payment of $74.00 per exam is due March 29th.

Group B: For students who qualify for a free or reduced lunch under the Federal School Lunch Guidelines, the cost is: $15.00 for up to 3 exams…..of which a $13.00 deposit per exam paid in February equals a final payment of $2.00 per exam is due March 29.

Group C: For students who qualify for a free or reduced lunch under the Federal School Lunch Guidelines and are taking a 4th/5th/ 6th exam the cost is: $53.00 for exam number 4/5/6 minus the $13.00 deposit paid for in February, a final payment of $40.00 per exam is due March 29.

Note: Final payments will be accepted before and after school through the 29th of March but not during classes. See Mr. Toro with questions!

All Classical High School students take a class called Junior Research Seminar. The class, in existence for approximately seven years, was created in response to Rhode Island Department of Education regulations, known as Proficiency Based Graduation Requirements. In view of the unique status of Classical as a high-performing school, it was decided to pursue a research-based option as opposed to a portfolio-based option in order to meet this part of the PBGR regime. The primary skills we try to teach students in the Research Seminar class are: conducting authentic research, evaluating and using authoritative and reliable research sources, writing a research paper that adheres to Modern Language Association and teacher defined guidelines, contacting and utilizing help from one or more experts in the subject area the student has chosen, applying their topic to the outside world (models, teaching a class, fund raising, to name just a few applied learning strategies) and, at the end of the semester, presenting their findings to a panel of judges composed of teachers, alumni, parents, district personnel, and other interested adults.

Students are allowed to conduct presentations only if they pass the classroom portion of the Research Seminar. The presentations must also receive a passing grade (seventeen out of twenty-four possible points) in order to successfully complete the entire Junior Research Seminar requirement.

On Monday, February 6th, the Autumn 2011 Semester students will conduct their presentations. This culminating activity is highly anticipated by the entire school community and gives the students an opportunity to showcase the knowledge they have learned and the confidence they have gained as a result of having successfully completed the Junior Research Seminar course. Presentation days are full-release days due to the logistics involved in staging the presentations and the importance attached to them. Therefore, only presenting students go to school on presentation days.

Classical is recruiting interested adults to serve as volunteer judges as a complement to the teachers who will be judges. Although presentations will be conducted all day long, outside judges may choose to serve only during the morning session or afternoon session. However, anyone who has not previously judged will be asked to attend a morning training session, lasting approximately one half hour. If there are a number of people who wish to judge only the afternoon session, we may be able to add another training session somewhere near the noon hour.

If you are interested in serving as a judge, please contact Richard Larkin, Library Media Specialist and PBGR Coordinator at richard.larkin@ppsd.org by January 30th.

Thank you for all the positive feedback I received about our new email communication system. I like the idea of communicating this way and as a parent myself I appreciate current news from the school. If you know a parent who would like to be on our list, have them contact the school to be added. I enjoy reading Bill Reynolds, a sports writer from the Providence Journal, “For What It’s Worth” column every Saturday in the sports section of the paper. He writes in reading point fashion; a style I’ve grown to enjoy so if you would allow I’d like to try it here.

Some Things to Keep in Mind:

This Monday, January 23, begins mid-term week here at Classical. Please be mindful that your teen may be stressing a bit. Mid-terms are a time honored tradition here at Classical that mimics the college exam process. Please make sure they eat well; limit texting and certainly all the social media. Also, students will tend to go to bed late during this time; please emphasize a good night’s rest. For a full schedule of mid-terms click here.

On Monday February 6, 2012 we will be having an all day release day for students EXCEPT for those juniors/seniors who will be presenting their junior exhibition projects. It is necessary for an all day release because all staff are involved in the judging and support process. The exhibition is a graduation requirement and the process will need the school’s full attention. So please note on your calendar that February 6th will be a no school day for everyone else. I will also be sending a Parentlink message home as well.

The next CHSCA (our parent group) meeting will be on Wednesday, January 25 at 6:30 pm. The meeting will be held at Michelle McKenzie’s house- 119 Lauriston St. 02906 (one block from the CVS on Hope St. on the Eastside). The meeting will focus on the content of the parent’s page on the Classical website. Michelle’s contact info is 521-3202 or you can email her at michellemck62@gmail.com.

As always thanks for your continued support and please feel free to call or email me with your comments or concerns.
